Condenser for the distributor ignition system.

The condenser (capacitor) is wired across the contact breaker points inside the distributor. As the points open it absorbs the surge of current that would otherwise jump the gap, suppressing arcing at the contacts and sharpening the collapse of the ignition coil’s magnetic field to produce a stronger spark. This protects the points from burning and pitting and helps maintain a consistent spark.

Fitted to petrol and V8 ignition systems using contact breaker points.
