Inner Tie Rod with an M20 rack thread, part of the rack-and-pinion steering linkage.

The inner tie rod screws into the end of the steering rack and carries the inner ball joint that lets the linkage pivot as the wheels are steered and the suspension articulates. It transmits rack movement outward to the outer track rod end, which in turn drives the steering knuckle. The joint sits inside the rack gaiter and relies on that gaiter to retain its grease and exclude water and grit, so a split gaiter should be renewed at the same time. Wear at this joint shows up as steering play, knocking over uneven surfaces and irregular tyre wear.

The M20 designation refers to the rack thread size – check the thread of the removed part before ordering. Suitable for both right-hand drive and left-hand drive steering gear.
