Description

Ignition coil assembly for the distributorless ignition system of the 1.8L K-Series four-cylinder petrol engine. Two are fitted per engine, each connecting to its spark plugs through HT leads from a downward-facing king lead connection.

The coil converts the low-voltage supply from the vehicle electrical system into the high-voltage pulse required to jump the spark plug gap, switched by the engine management system to set ignition timing. The assembly includes the mounting bracket, which holds the unit at the correct position and orientation on the engine so the HT lead runs are unstrained and the connections face downward as designed.

A deteriorating coil shows as misfire under load, rough idle, hard starting and increased emissions. Coils are normally renewed as a pair so both deliver matched output.
