Starter Motor for the M47 2.0L 16-valve TD4 diesel engine, part of the engine starting circuit.
The unit mounts to the joint face between engine and transmission and cranks the engine through a pinion that engages the flywheel ring gear. Its integral solenoid switches the high-current battery feed on the start signal, moves the pinion into mesh with the ring gear, and withdraws it once the engine runs under its own power.
Diesel applications place a higher cranking-torque demand on the starter than petrol engines of comparable capacity, because the motor has to turn the engine against a much higher compression ratio. The armature, field windings and drive are rated accordingly, and the mounting face, pinion and terminal arrangement are specific to this engine.
Before replacing the unit, confirm battery condition, charging voltage and the security of the main feed and earth connections – voltage drop across a corroded terminal or a poor engine earth produces the same slow, laboured cranking as a worn starter.
