It transmits drive from the propshaft into the front differential. The splines on the original coupling are prone to wear, which results in a loss of drive to the front axle. Fitting a replacement coupling shaft restores the drive connection while leaving the front differential in place, so the differential does not need to be removed or replaced to carry out the repair.
