Layshaft for the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox, part of the geartrain assembly.

The layshaft (countershaft) carries the constant-mesh gear cluster and runs parallel to the mainshaft. Drive from the input shaft is taken up by the layshaft gears, which in turn transmit it to the corresponding mainshaft gears to establish each forward ratio. The shaft is supported on bearings at each end of the gearbox casing.
