This tensioner maintains correct tension on the ancillary drive belt, which drives the alternator, viscous fan, and other auxiliary components. The spring-loaded mechanism damps belt tension fluctuations caused by engine speed changes and varying loads, preventing belt slip and premature wear. It works in conjunction with the tensioner bracket assembly on the BMW M51 engine.
