On belt-driven diesel applications the bolt secures the timing belt tensioner to the engine front, and on other installations the same fixing retains the timing rear cover. Because the tensioner is clamped by this bolt, its thread condition and correct torque directly affect the belt tension that is set on assembly, and therefore valve timing.

Timing drive fixings are routinely renewed alongside the belt: they are torqued to a specific figure and a stretched or damaged thread cannot reliably hold tensioner setting.
