Belt-driven from the engine, the pump draws fluid from the reservoir and delivers it under pressure to the steering box, providing the hydraulic assistance that reduces steering effort and maintains steering response as engine speed varies. It is the pressure source for the steering hydraulic circuit; loss of pump output results in heavy, unassisted steering.
