Differential Bearing for the Salisbury axle. It is one of the pair of taper roller bearings that carry the differential carrier – the housing holding the crown wheel and differential gears – within the axle casing.

The two carrier bearings locate the crown wheel against the pinion and are set to a defined preload, which in turn fixes the crown-wheel-to-pinion backlash. A worn carrier bearing lets the differential shift under load, producing axle whine and changed backlash, and is renewed as a pair during a differential overhaul.
